During the 18th and early 19th centuries, Europe was experiencing an aggressive outbreak of smallpox with high mortality. In 1796, Edward Jenner, an English physician, succeeded in demonstrating the efficacy of a smallpox vaccine.
In Spain, the court physician of Charles IV, Francisco Javier Balmis, learned of the success achieved by his English colleague and convinced the king to finance an expedition to distribute the vaccine free of charge in the New World: the Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition.
By then, Isabel Zendal had already started her professional career. Dr Balmis asked the king’s permission for Isabel Zendal to join the expedition as a nurse.
During the journey, it was decided to inoculate a group of children as living containers of the vaccine in order to «preserve the vaccine»: Isabel Zendal was in charge of the health and well-being of these precious members of the expedition.
Discover the true and surprising story behind it thanks to Don Rafael Codes who will reveal aspects that have remained unknown for centuries.
